MEM Edtech Solutions has signed a memorandum of understanding with Tespack Oy, a clean-energy technology company from Finland. The collaboration points both companies at a challenge we know from the inside: how to bring digital education to schools that the power grid and the internet have never reliably reached.
Smart Solar Media Units
The partnership centres on Smart Solar Media Units, our offline-first digital learning hardware for schools with unreliable electricity and internet. Each unit runs on solar power and carries preloaded educational content, so a lesson does not depend on a plug socket or a signal bar.
Our design principle has stayed the same from the start: a rural school should not have to become fully connected before it receives digital education. The unit meets the school as it is, in the conditions the school actually faces.
What offline-first means day to day
It means the teacher opens the unit in the morning without wondering whether the network is up. It means content is already on the device, chosen before the unit leaves Lusaka. It means the sun, not the grid, keeps the classroom’s technology alive, and when the power fails the lesson continues.
Why solar
Many rural Zambian schools face long outages or no grid connection at all. Solar power turns that from a barrier into an energy plan: charge by day, teach with confidence, and stop waiting for a cable that may never arrive.
What the collaboration plans to enable
Tespack brings strength in clean-energy technology. MEM brings years of Zambian classroom experience, from The Teacher’s Village learning platform to teacher training on the ground. Together, the plan is to bring both the technology and the digital educational content that rural Zambian schools need, pairing Finnish engineering with lessons learned in Western Province classrooms. The aim stays practical: a working classroom, powered and loaded, wherever the school stands.
The memorandum sets the direction of the partnership rather than a fixed list of deliverables. As the work progresses, we will share what it produces for schools, and we will keep the focus where it belongs: on teachers and learners in classrooms the grid forgot.
