A good partnership answers a problem you already have. We are fortunate to have three.
MEM has signed memorandums of understanding with three Finnish companies, and those agreements have grown into a consortium with a shared ambition. As NIRAS, implementer of Zambia’s AGS programme, published: the consortium “aims to create an education system that gives both teachers and students the tools they need”.
Who is at the table
- Tespack Oy, a Finnish clean-energy technology company, works with us on bringing technology and digital educational content to rural Zambia through our Smart Solar Media Units, the offline-first hardware that runs on solar power with preloaded content.
- Soprano, also from Finland, has signed an MOU with MEM as part of the Finnish partner group. Its contribution sits in communications and digital services for the education ecosystem, the connective tissue that helps platforms, schools and people stay in touch.
- A third Finnish partner completes the group, part of the same consortium effort.
Three companies, three sets of expertise, one shared direction.
Where this came from
The story starts with AGS Zambia, the Accelerated Growth for SMEs programme implemented by NIRAS. The programme supported our internationalisation and prearranged meetings with Finnish companies working in our space. Professor Muuka has described how those meetings led to partnerships with three Finnish companies. The agreements we have signed today grew from that soil.
MEM’s role in the consortium
MEM anchors the collaboration in Zambian classrooms. We know the schools, the curriculum and the teachers. Our Smart Solar Media Units carry clean-energy-powered learning into classrooms without reliable electricity, built on a simple principle: a rural school should not have to become fully connected before it receives digital education.
Alongside the hardware sits The Teacher’s Village, our digital community and learning platform for Zambian educators, together with AI teacher support that keeps teachers at the helm. The Finnish partners bring technology, communications and digital services around that foundation.
What follows
The plan from here is practical. Keep deploying and refining solar-powered learning for off-grid schools. Keep growing what teachers can reach through the platform. And let the consortium do what consortia are for: put complementary strengths to work on one problem instead of three.
Partnerships across continents only work when both sides bring something real. Finland brings engineering and digital expertise. Zambia brings classrooms, curriculum knowledge and the daily reality of teaching where the power cuts. Put together, that is a promising trade.
