Making CPD count for Zambian teachers

Ask teachers about professional development and you will often hear the same story: a long drive, a hall, a stack of handouts and very little follow-up. Continuous Professional Development is part of a Zambian teacher’s career. The real question is not whether to do it, but whether it counts: whether a Saturday workshop changes anything in the classroom on Monday.

MEM Edtech Solutions & Consultancy is recognised as a CPD Service Provider within Zambia’s teacher CPD ecosystem. That recognition carries an obligation we take seriously. The content has to be worth a teacher’s scarce time.

What useful CPD looks like

  • Practical over theoretical. Teachers leave with something they can use this week: a technique, a tool, a plan ready to adapt.
  • Grounded in the local curriculum. Training that references the Competency-Based Curriculum and real classroom conditions, not imported case studies detached from Zambian reality.
  • Respectful of experience. Many participants have taught for decades. Good CPD builds on that instead of talking down to it.
  • Sustained rather than one-off. A single workshop fades within weeks. Follow-up, peer discussion and classroom practice are what make learning stick.

Technology as a CPD multiplier

We deliver development through training sessions and through The Teacher’s Village, our digital community and learning platform, which keeps materials and peer conversation available between sessions. Tools feed development too. A teacher who reviews, edits and approves an AI-drafted lesson plan in Teacher T is, in the process, thinking hard about planning itself. The tool becomes a mirror as well as a shortcut.

Remote access matters just as much in a country where teachers may be hours from the nearest training venue. A basic phone on a rural staffroom table can carry a course, a discussion and a set of materials that no bus schedule would ever deliver. Development that fits inside a teacher’s real week, rather than around it, is development that lasts.

Fitting the wider ecosystem

Zambia’s CPD framework gives professional development structure. Service providers like MEM add capacity to that structure: more topics, more delivery formats, more reach into districts where training has been thin. We do not measure our work in certificates collected. We measure it in whether the technique appears in next week’s lesson.
