A committed teacher in a rural Zambian school can be professionally alone. Colleagues are few. Materials are scattered across textbooks, printouts and old files. Training happens far away and infrequently. The knowledge needed to teach well exists in the system, but it rarely reaches the people who need it, when they need it.
The challenge
Zambian educators needed three things at once: reliable teaching materials aligned to their curriculum, a realistic path for professional growth, and a community that understood their context. No existing option delivered all three in a way that worked on a basic phone, over a weak network, on a tight budget.
The approach
The Teacher’s Village, launched in 2018, is MEM Edtech Solutions & Consultancy’s answer and its flagship. It is a digital community and learning platform built for Zambian educators using mobile, off-grid and web technologies.
- Educational materials that teachers can carry straight into real classrooms.
- Teacher growth, including CPD-aligned content and remote tutoring support.
- A community where Zambian educators swap ideas, questions and encouragement.
- AI support through Teacher T, which drafts Competency-Based Curriculum lesson plans while the teacher reviews, edits and approves every output.
- Offline and mobile options, because connectivity is not a fair assumption everywhere.
The results so far
Growth has been steady rather than flashy. Injini, an African edtech organisation, reported that the platform had more than 800 users by April 2022. We cite that as Injini reported it at the time: a milestone from 2022, not a current claim.
Recognition followed the work. In 2020, MEM took part in the Injini Zambian EdTech Sprint Week, run in partnership with BongoHive. In 2022, The Teacher’s Village was selected among 10 African startups for the Injini Virtual EdTech Bootcamp, won a R5,000 cash prize at the Injini Virtual Pitch Event and received business mentorship. In 2025, MEM submitted the platform to the MIT Solve 2025 Global Learning Challenge. Submitted, and we say exactly that: a submission is a submission, not an award.
What comes next
The name carries the philosophy. A village is where a profession lives: it shares what it knows, trains its young and holds its standards. The next chapters deepen the materials, the AI support and the platform’s reach into the schools that need it most.
